  • First, we'll set your goals

Together, we’ll pick a balance of music during your zoom piano lessons to strengthen all of your skills and to infuse your practice with joy.

🥬 The key to creating a piano practice that you’ll stick with is finding the leafy greens of piano that will grow your skills & knowledge easily because they are sooo good for you, and..

🍒 Always having a cherry on top during your piano practice will ensure that you have something you love that you will practice again and again. This is probably going to be your favorite music to learn, and the most challenging!

  • Then, we'll tap into systems of spiralic learning

〰️This means that no matter where you’re at in your piano journey, we’ll cover all of the details. You’ll finally have a word for that squiggly line in the middle of the sheet music, and you’ll know how to play it on piano, too.

🌀Each time we visit a concept in music during our zoom piano lessons, we will deepen our understanding and learn a new layer about how it functions when we zoom out and look at the big picture.

  • You won't do it alone

🌿In addition to the accountability we share, you will be learning the cultural context that makes music what it is.

🌌After all, music is not created in a vacuum. It is a social and cultural product, a reflection of the ideas of everyone around us and a mirror of ourselves.

💫That’s why it doesn’t make sense to play music that you don’t love just because that’s what everyone has always done. Your piano playing will connect you to the world around you in a new way, letting you make expansive connections internally and externally.

Does this sound like you?

  • You’ve learned a song before, and felt so awesome being able to sing or play along. But sometimes when you try to learn a new song on your own without remote piano lessons, you get stuck.

  • You’ve heard horror stories about piano teachers that shame you for not practicing enough, or you are in personal recovery from having one of these debilitating teachers in the past.

  • You always have major FOMO at jam sessions and concerts, or when your friends post videos of their new song on their instrument. You know that with online piano lessons for adults, you can do that too!

  • You want to start remote piano lessons, but you’re not sure what level you’re at, or even what songs you want to learn. All of the music schools in your town focus on teaching kids how to play piano... what about private piano lessons for adults?

I get it. I’ve been there!

It’s not a great feeling, to know you’re ready for the next step, and to know you want to have the joy and pride of learning something new, but not knowing where to start.

I’ve had so many times in life that I was ready to learn but wasn’t sure if there was anyone ready to meet me where I was at.

It probably feels like you’ve tried everything to learn piano on your own

You’ve watched the videos

Honestly, you’re pretty good! At that one song... when you’re following along with that video... and as long as no one else is watching...

You downloaded the app

You downloaded the app, and it totally makes sense! Now if only the keys on your piano were highlighted too...

You took piano lessons when you were younger

Playing the songs wasn’t that hard as long as you didn’t have to read the notes or build the chords by yourself.

You tried just winging it

You know... playing random notes, making up songs, and improvising. But it just felt... random? And you weren’t sure how to give it any real meaning or self expression.

You asked your friend/sibling/partner

You asked them to show you how to play piano but now you’re not talking…

Honestly? I love all of these options as a way to learn piano.

They make piano feel more accessible and approachable. But when you’re setting personal musical goals that feel important to you, sometimes you just need more.

Because you know what you want to play on piano! And you love music- you don’t want a negative piano lesson experience to ruin that for you.

You already are a musician. You have all of the intuition and observation that you need to play piano.

You can feel what it’s like to learn new things and enjoy the process. To deepen your understanding while having fun, and engaging with creative play. To be personally expressive and musically reflective in the same breath.

I know what it’s like to feel stuck. To feel shame around not having fast growth, or to be playing the flashiest pieces. I also know how easy it feels to grow at your natural pace, blooming into something new while leaning into the music that truly inspires and motivates you.

That’s why these private piano lessons for adults are unlike anything you’ve experienced yet.

The reasons that these online piano lessons for adults are different from anything you’ve ever experienced?

  • Rooted in Joy

    💖

The truth is, you’re only reading this because you want to learn how to play piano. Because you think learning piano will be a fun and worth while way to spend your time these days! And it can be! But we all know someone who has had a bad experience with a music teacher, or pushy parent, and music lost its luster.

The most meaningful form of learning is rooted in joy. Think of kittens playing- they learn how to communicate with each other and practice defense strategies innately, and these become automatic responses to connect them to their community and to defend themselves in fight or flight moments. As children, we learn through play more often than not. Learning through play and joy does two things: it gives us an intuitive, somatic response to the music we are playing, making it easier to learn piano, and it makes it an easy yes that you want to come back to again and again. Because it’s fun!

  • Spiralic Systems

    🌀

The magic of spiralic learning is that we are all beginners and also we are all experts. Every time that we practice a skill or visit a concept, we learn something new about it.

Think of spiralic learning in private piano lessons for adults like this: you know how when you watched “Dirty Dancing” the 16th time you still saw something new that you’ve never noticed before? I know when I watched it again last week, I heard a song that I swear I’ve never heard before? (”Mama Said,” by the Shirelles. You’re welcome.)

Learning is like that! Every time you try something again, or every time that your piano teacher explains something to you, you will soak up one little bit of it- maybe a lot of bit of it! But you won’t know everything right away. Time and consistency are the keys to learning something in depth. The joy in this? Every time we watch “Dirty Dancing,” we’ll still find something new.

  • Connecting

    🧵

All music has deep and meaningful cultural stories buried within it. Understanding the roots behind the rhythms, and the legacies that took this musical cliche from obscurity into standard. Music is a way to travel through time and space, and to step into a world away from yours.

It’s this connectivity that started my musical journey and keeps me here. I am driven by telling these musical stories and peeling back layers that often get missed. We will play music by artists from underrepresented groups, and learn their histories through a lenses of cultural context.

This connection goes both ways. By working together to learn piano and develop music, I get to learn about the music that has shaped you, and I always learn about songs and artists that I’ve never heard. There is too much music out there to know it all alone- we will always learn more together.

But wait…

Aren’t you classically trained?

How are these online piano lessons for adults any different from regular private piano lessons for adults?

It’s true, I have a degree in Music Education with a primary in piano, and secondary in harp. I’ve taught almost every kind of music class in every type of environment there is- from instrumental classes and choir program, in public schools and private festivals, and in rural and urban spaces- not to mention in person and online.

And here’s what I learned from teaching in such a diverse array of spaces and teaching so many different people of all ages, all over: we learn best when we are engaging with joy and play. When we feel safe and supported, and when we have all of the tools around us.

I had a wonderful and supportive musical upbringing. Once I hit music academia, some of my easy and fun learning hit a wall- I had been so lucky to have engaging and detailed piano teachers growing up, and the hard truth is that professors are not good teachers. They are experts in their topic, but not always experienced educators, and often recite information and expect you to soak it all up and spit it back out. That just didn’t work for me, and I don’t expect it to work for you.

So joining me in online piano lessons for adults means you will experience all of the best practices of music learning that work for new learners paired with all of the detailed and comprehensive information that comes with experience. And it is woven together with your experience and interests at the front. These online piano lessons for adults are customized for you.
